And Another Gold Award in the Monthlies for Pet Portraits

I am just loving the Societies Monthly competition this year. It has got me motivated more than usual to keep producing work I think is worthy of entering.

This year so far I've received 4 Gold's and 10 Highly Commended's. And these 10 images will be re-judged at a later date and can be upgraded to Gold if the second judge deems them to be of a Gold standard.

And the most important aspect of this competition is that all Golds get a further assessment in December, this time by a judging panel where the best image in each category is selected giving the photographer the title of Photographer of the Year for that category. These awards are then presented at a black tie awards dinner in London in January at the Societies annual convention, something I look forward to every year.

I've been nominated 4 years out of the past 6 and I'm determined to make this the year where I walk away with an award. My fingers are crossed and more importantly I'm still working hard.

Winner of the Master Photographers Association's UK Family Portrait Award

This year for the first time I decided to join the MPA (Master Photographers Association). As a qualified member this entitled me to compete amongst other professionals throughout the UK. Last night the awards ceremony was held at the Hinckley Island Hotel (amazingly close to home for a change) where I received the news that my family portrait won its category. I am over the moon that it was a unanimous decision from all judges who felt it stood out against all others in the category making it the clear winner. And to have John Stoddart, a man who has photographed a great number of A list celebrities, present the award telling me this is a fantastic image was the icing on the cake. My Fellowship in Child Portraiture, Baby Photographer of the Year and All Things Convention Related

Its been a very busy year for me. Hence the reason I've not been keeping this blog up to date. That's about to change though. I anticipate this coming year to be even busier but I plan on getting a lot more organised and keeping on top of things like this. For now though I'd like to tell you all about last week. I keep trying to think of some words to describe this past week and I keep coming back to 'I had the time of my life' and breaking into song in my head. Apart from when my daughter was born I haven't had a better time in my life. This week was spent at the Societies Convention where in excess of 14 thousand photographers from around the world meet to take part in print competitions, submit qualification panels and join in on various classes and events. Freddie Returns!

I had another fantastic shoot this week. We spent an hour or two trying different looks with some different props I recently found at an antiques fair. I love antiques fairs by the way. Its a bit of a treasure hunt. You never know what you're going to find and each prop gives something different to my portraits. And with each prop is a little inspiration. This session was with an existing client so I took the time to do a little experimentation. I have an old backdrop that I kept meaning to use although never found a way to use it effectively. But the antique props got me thinking that maybe this traditional backdrop would be the perfect match. If this didn't work it was being put away for the foreseeable future.
