Another Gold for a Family Portrait and this Time with a Judges Choice Award too

I never know how my portraits will be received.  And it can be a little heartbreaking when one I've come to love receives little to no attention. As such I had my reservations with this one. I loved it but I had also invested so much in it that maybe I was too attached to be able to judge it for myself. Would others feel the same as me or see this as just another family portrait?


Having been given not just a Gold for this image but also the Judges Choice I am thrilled that others see something in it too.  It certainly confirms that I am onto a winner here. I look forward to creating more such portraits in the future.  I think I've finally cracked it where family portraits are concerned. This has always been an area of weakness (and worry) for me. Perhaps not anymore.  Of course it does help a lot to have such a co-operative and happy family. I couldn't have done it without them.

Wedding Workshop in Nottingham

On Wednesday of this week I made the trek up to Nottingham (which wasn't actually much of a trek compared to most of the other delegates who travelled from as far as Glasgow, Portsmouth and South Wales) for a workshop held at Crash Taylor's home. Crash, a very talented photographer, specialising in weddings is someone I can highly recommend to anyone. Apart from spending the morning getting to know the other photographers we then spent the afternoon photographing a hired model, in her own wedding dress, as we wandered through Nottingham Castle. It provided me a chance to see how other photographers handled their weddings as well as a chance to experiment with equipment I haven't had a chance to play around with. Like in this image to the right. Here I used my flash, mounted on a tripod off to the side. Happy New Year Everyone!

Well again it has been a while since I last updated the blog. It was just crazy busy in the lead up to Christmas, with completing all outstanding orders and completing work on the studio. It is yet another New Year's resolution that I maintain this blog on a more regular basis. It is my goal that this year there will be no need for apologies for any lengthy absences. Since the completion of the studio I can already feel my life turning around. I feel happier, less stressed and much more organised, both personally and professionally. Our home is becoming a home again, now that all the photography gear has been moved out. And now I am able to store all my photography gear in one place it is making my life much simpler. I now know exactly where everything is and it is at my finger tips. What a difference this is making to my life. London in Spring, Whats Not to Love?

Well I know there is still a lot not to love but I'm choosing to see the great things about London at the moment. I am having a ball this year visiting London as often as I can. Which is unusual for me since I usually prefer the comfort of my own home, in rural old Leicestershire. Staying home and avoiding people has always been the easy option. But this year, possibly due to the wonderful weather we keep having, has me longing for venturing out. Again, just like my last trip, I headed out with my good friend Panikos Hajistilly . Living in North London he finds it easy to meet up for our shoots. This time though I had more of an idea of the sights I wanted to use as the backdrops for my portraits. Portraits of a Little Girl Named Ava

This time I got the pleasure of photographing a young girl.  These images are still part of my current personal project.  I am loving doing some work for myself.  I feel a bit like I have my hobby back.  Before I made the decision to be a photographer I worried that the thing I did to make myself happy and distract myself from day to day life would be lost forever.  I didn't want this thing that made me happy to become a burden.  Thankfully, for the most part, it hasn't.  But sometimes it really helps to do some photography for me, so that the hobby part of photography is still there.
