Our First Cake Smash ~ Birthday Portraits

Cake smash sessions have been an interest of mine since I started seeing them around. Actually, 9 years ago for my daughters birthday I made her a mini cake to go along with the main cake with the specific purpose of letting her trash it. I just didn't have a portrait business at the time to turn it into special portraits.

(We started with some clean shots so this session wasn't just about messy cake)

So when I had the inquiry I thought how could I refuse. I'm always up for trying new things and I love the challenge of trying new portraits and putting my skills and creativity to the test.

(Mum thought she'd try her in a dress even though dresses aren't really their thing. Her daughter proved her right in that she clearly does not like dresses either)

Luckily my client had some ideas of her own. She supplied the bunting, which she had already purchased. She also supplied the cake and the cloth nappy which together provided great balance in the images. At first I wasn't sure about the bold colours as I don't often use them. But the more I thought about it the more I liked the idea.

I was thrilled with the experience and the results. I'm not sure though if it was down to having an easy baby or an easy setting. She was so lovely to work with. She wasn't always stationary but we were able to hold her attention for a great deal of the session.

And a happier baby we couldn't have asked for, until she accidently got her foot full of icing that is. She wasn't terribly thrilled with this.

Anyway, having never done one of these before, nor having much knowledge of what such a session entails, I decided to start with a few portraits without the cake. I tried to limit this though so that we didn't waste all the good smiles before the cake was introduced. I followed this with a few of the cake on its own.

And then we let her in to do as she pleased with the cake. It was only seconds before her fingers were in the icing and then in her mouth. Without our help though she never would have reached down to the actual cake and I doubt she would have made much of a mess. But that made it more fun and tasty for us. I just love cake. And I truly loved the results of this session. I couldn't have been happier with the final results.

If your child is about to celebrate a birthday and fancy giving this a go please get in touch as I'd love to do this again. And don't think your child needs to be turning 1 to do this as I'm sure a second or third birthday would work just as well.

Portraits Even a Teenager Boy Loves

Finally I've had the opportunity to photograph a young man in my studio again. And funnily enough this was the second time that week which is absolutely superb. In both cases these young men were just as enthusiastic to be involved as I was, which is something I don't often get when I'm working with very young children, my usual subjects. With young children I find my energy in their cuteness. But with young adults I get energy from their excitement over how the portraits are working out. I get such a buzz from the experience and that can keep me going for hours, often editing the photos straight after the shoot for hours more. Shoots for teenagers is something I've been wanting to focus on for some time. Its not something that I often get asked for though unfortunately. My Work Experience by Zak Millard

My name is Zak Millard and I am 15 years old. For my two weeks work experience I chose to incorporate a passion of mine, photography. Christina is a very competent photographer and a easy person to get on with, she is also patient which was good for me because I often forgot something or had to ask twice about an instruction. My two weeks with Christina have been very helpful. Though I am a aspiring photographer there is much I have learnt, including: Different lights and there uses. Different light set ups. Key photoshop skills. Exposure compensation. AV/TV settings. Composition. How to keep children's interest! One of the most useful things Christina has taught me is that of photo editing. Photography isn't all about taking the pictures though obviously this is important. More Newborn Baby Portraits

This time we worked with a more alert baby, even though she was within the 2 weeks we recommend for newborn sessions. But to be honest, I do like getting a selection of both. Its nice to get the chance to see their eyes as well as those beautifully peaceful sleeping portraits. Making eye contact is just difficult and smiles are nearly impossible, which are only wind related if we managed them at all anyway. I always try to get a few detail shots in order to capture their tiny little fingers and toes. These can be quite difficult with an awake baby as they move so much and I need to rely on autofocus to make sure these details are in focus and with such a narrow depth of field this can be difficult. And rather than just a hand or a foot I like to get some of baby's face in the shot as well which poses another problem with an awake baby, they just don't stay still for very long so their hands and feet aren't always in the right place....

We Have New Products!!

I am pleased to announce the introduction of 2 of our new products. The first is one I've already been selling, however it now has a twist. We now frame our canvases which I find give them a much more luxurious and eye catching finish. In fact, it makes them look more like a finished article. We use a very chunky frame moulding, 6cm square, which fits around our chunky canvases perfectly. I'm looking forward to getting one for my own home myself. Just waiting for that perfect image of my children first. Unfortunately photographer's children are the worst to photograph. Ask any photographer who they least enjoy photographing and they will likely tell you its their own children. The other new product is our Accordian Keepsakes. We're Proud to Announce the Launch of Our New Website!!

I have spent the past several months being disappointed with our existing site. It did the job for a while and at the time was certainly the only site I could fathom owning. But things have moved on, as they always do and I was in need of something new. What that was, I wasn't too sure. I knew it was out there though so I went searching. This January, at the SWPP convention I found exactly what I wanted. So I spent the past several weeks building up the trial version, making it just right. I went through old portraits choosing only my favourites and then spent time preparing favourites from many of my recent sittings.
